A visit to Tirumala — the abode of Lord Sri Venkateswara — is one of the most profound pilgrimages in India. Tirumala receives millions of visitors every year, making thoughtful planning essential for a comfortable and spiritually fulfilling darshan experience. This guide covers everything a first-time or returning pilgrim should know before travelling to Tirupati and Tirumala.
Understanding the Different Darshan Types
TTD offers several categories of darshan, broadly falling into free darshan and paid special entry darshan.
Sarva Darshan (Free Darshan): Available to all pilgrims at no cost. Wait times can vary greatly depending on the season and day. It is advisable to carry identification documents.
Special Entry Darshan (SED): A paid darshan quota that allows pilgrims to have darshan at a set time slot, significantly reducing waiting. Tickets must be booked in advance through the TTD online portal.
Seegradarshan / Seeghra Seva: A faster-entry paid seva. Quota is limited and booking opens on the TTD portal.
Arjitha Sevas: Various scheduled sevas conducted in the sanctum — Thomala Seva, Archana, Kalyanotsavam and others. These have separate booking procedures and limited availability.
Note: Ticket availability, pricing, and booking windows change periodically. Always verify on the TTD website before planning around a specific darshan type.
Practical Tips for Your Darshan Day
Identification: Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter ID, or PAN card) for each adult member of your group.
Dress Code: Modest traditional attire is required — dhoti or pyjama with kurta for men; saree or churidar for women. Shorts, sleeveless tops, and non-traditional western clothing are not permitted inside the temple.
Prohibited items: Cameras, electronic devices (mobile phones must be deposited at the designated counters), footwear, and leather items are not permitted inside the main temple.
Cloak rooms and lockers: TTD provides free cloak-room facilities near the temple complex for footwear and other belongings.
What to carry: Drinking water, light snacks for long queues, medicines, and a small towel or spare set of clothes for children. Avoid carrying large luggage into the queue lines.
Best time to visit: Weekdays and non-festival days generally have shorter queues. Major festival periods (Brahmotsavam, Vaikunta Ekadasi) attract very large crowds.
Physical accessibility: TTD provides separate accessible darshan facilities for differently-abled pilgrims and senior citizens. Contact TTD information counters for guidance.
Getting to Tirumala from Tirupati
Tirumala is approximately 20–25 km from Tirupati city via the ghat road. There are two main ways to reach:
By road (cab or private vehicle): The ghat road ascent is approximately 18–19 km with multiple hairpin bends. A cab or private vehicle is the most convenient option, especially for families, elderly pilgrims, and those with young children. Parking is available at designated Tirumala parking areas.
By TTD buses: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) operates regular buses between Tirupati bus stand and Tirumala. These are economical and run frequently.
On foot (Paadala Yatra): Dedicated footpaths exist for those who wish to ascend Tirumala on foot as a form of devotion. The most popular route is Alipiri mettu (about 3,552 steps). Starting early in the morning is strongly recommended.
Akshaya Cabs tip: If you prefer a cab for the ghat ascent, particularly for families and groups, we are available 24/7. WhatsApp us for a confirmed fare before your travel.
